The Smart Way to Find Game Development Learning Resources
Stop hunting for "the best" tutorial. Learn how to match each skill — engines, design, troubleshooting — to the right kind of source, plus a few books and communities worth knowing.
When we sat down to plan this final article in our beginner's game development series, the idea was simple: list some good resources for each part of the process. But the deeper we got, the clearer it became that a plain list wouldn't hold up — resources are scattered everywhere, and a list goes stale fast. So instead, this article does something more useful: it teaches you how to find the right resources yourself, whatever you're trying to learn. As the saying goes, it's better to teach someone to fish than to hand them one — learn this, and you'll never struggle to find the right tutorial, course, or book again.
Different Resources Work in Different Places
There's no single best place to learn game development — it depends on what you're learning. For a game engine, the engine maker's own site is usually the most complete source. For design software, video courses from working professionals tend to work better, since they build up from the basics. Q&A sites are surprisingly valuable too — even without any structured lessons, you'll pick up a large share of what you know just from browsing them over time.
Realistically, almost any topic today has more text and video resources than you could ever get through. That abundance is part of the problem: too many options make it hard to know where to start, and that slows learning down more than it helps. A few clear habits can fix this.
Tip 1: Be Specific, Not General

Say you want to build a 2D game in Unity with a few particular features. Don't search for "learn Unity" or "make a 2D game in Unity" — those terms are far too broad, and the results could be about almost anything. Even a course that looks related might miss what you actually need; you could end up watching ten hours of video to use maybe one.
Instead, think about the exact skills your project needs. Take Flappy Bird as an example — building it in Unity doesn't require learning the whole engine. You mainly need touch input, how sprites work, and 2D physics. Learning this way pays off twice: you stop wasting time on things you don't need yet, and after doing it a few times, you'll realize you've picked up a large part of a complex engine almost by accident — through your own small projects, instead of one long, expensive course.
Many beginners try to learn an entire piece of software from A to Z with no clear goal, and it rarely works — especially for multi-purpose tools that are too broad to ever "finish" learning. Always start by defining exactly what you need.
Tip 2: Know Which Source to Trust for What
The second habit is understanding where different kinds of tutorials come from, and knowing when to use each type.
Some content is made by people outside a tool's own development team — independent creators and course platforms like Tuts+, Pluralsight, and Lynda. Other content comes straight from the software's own makers. If you want to know what a feature can actually do, official documentation is usually your best bet: the people who built the tool understand its limits better than anyone, and for their own commercial reasons, they tend to explain things as simply as possible.
If you're trying to learn how to do something — a specific technique or workflow — content from other professionals and enthusiasts usually serves you better. Official docs rarely cover advanced techniques in depth; they typically show that something is possible and leave the "how" up to you.
Game engines are a partial exception. Because of the intense competition between them, most engine makers now publish extensive learning material to get beginners up to speed fast. Look at Unity's or Unreal Engine's own learning sections and you'll find plenty of documentation, videos, and full sample projects. Unreal in particular stands out — its sample projects tend to be more varied and visually striking, and you can download them for free to study how everything fits together, or even reuse pieces of them in your own game.
None of this means outside tutorials aren't valuable — they are, especially for specific techniques. But don't rely on them to learn an entire tool from scratch. With enough patience, you can learn most of any software mainly through its maker's own documentation. Just remember that reading alone isn't enough: plan to spend more time practicing than watching or reading.

A large part of game development isn't really about software at all. Level design, for instance, has nothing to do with knowing Unity or Unreal — it's a skill in how you arrange stages and shape the flow of a game. For skills like this, the most complete resources tend to be books, not courses. Search around and you'll notice that, unlike engines and tools, there isn't really a cohesive body of structured tutorials for something like level design or progression systems — mostly scattered articles, unless you turn to a book.
A few worth knowing about, all of which have free digital editions floating around: The Art of Game Design by Jesse Schell, Game Mechanics: Advanced Game Design by Ernest Adams and Joris Dormans, and Ultimate Game Design (McGraw-Hill). Keep in mind that skills like level design lean much more on hands-on experience than theory, but these three are a genuinely useful starting point. The Extra Credits YouTube channel is also worth subscribing to for the same kind of material.
When You Get Stuck
Beyond all of this, a real chunk of what you'll learn comes from simply running into problems during development — and sometimes staring at your screen for hours trying to fix them. Our advice: never spend more than an hour or two stuck on something you don't understand. Go find the answer instead.

99.99% of the time, you're not the first person to hit that exact wall, and someone before you has already asked. Depending on your field, different communities are your best bet — Stack Overflow for programming questions, gamedev.net for game development more broadly.
But more important than which site you use is how well you ask. Learning to ask a good question doesn't just speed up your game development — it makes you noticeably more effective in general. First, game development is a young field compared to most others, so most existing tutorials focus on learning tools and engines — which, frankly, isn't that complicated. Skills like level design lean much more heavily on your own experience, and material on them is far more limited by comparison.
Second, if English isn't your first language, it's worth investing in it. The deepest, most complete resources — in almost every category above — are written in English, and you'll run into a hard ceiling without it.
